Following passage is taken from book ‘The Way to Happy Marriage Life” by Hazrat Maulana Shah Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar Saheb (damat barkatuhum)

The next Hadith is:

إِنَّ أَعْظَمَ النِّكَاحِ بَرَكَةً أَيْسَرُهُ مَؤُْنَةً

“The most blessed Nikah is the one in which least expenses are incurred, and is simple.”

Allah Ta’ala has put blessing in simplicity, but nowadays the weddings have to be in halls and thousands of people are invited for meals. Food is served in buffet style, free intermingling of sexes, various types of food is served, music is blaring loudly, photos are taken with the bride being displayed on the stage, if possible then the whole wedding is also put on video etc.

About buffet style eating, Allah Ta’ala states in the Holy Qur’aan,

﴾وَيَأْكُلُونَ كَمَا تَأْكُلُ الْأَنْعَامُ﴿

“They eat like animals,”

This verse was for the Kuffaar. What a pity that the Muslims are now imitating the Kuffaar. Whereas the true benefactor of the Ummat announced fourteen hundred years back, that do not eat and drink while standing,

نَهٰی رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى الله ُعَلَيهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الاَکْلِ وَالشُّرْبِ قَائِمًا

The Muslims are openly going against this beloved teaching.

Another evil in these weddings is that video films are made of the wedding and certain bearded and so-called pious people often sit and watch all this occur. It is NOT permissible to even sit there. It is Wajib to go away from there immediately.

Any gathering where Allah Ta’ala is disobeyed should be walked out on, even as far as removing the morsel that was in the mouth already. These are evil customs by which the Nikah is deprived of blessings. Attendants in uniform are hired to serve. Some people hire bands to play Haraam music and hire an elephant from the zoo.

The astounding fact is that these people belong to those strata of society who live in shacks and who accept Zakaat. I have seen such people on the occasions of their weddings resorting to such extravagance.

To give Zakaat to such people is Haraam for they have money saved at the bank, which causes them to be excluded from the category of recipients for Zakaat. Do not give your Zakaat to people who make collection of Zakaat a profession. By helping such people one is actually aiding in the commission of Haraam acts. This was with reference to spurious customs innovated by people and which is so called Barakat.

The following is reported in a hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari (RA):

“Oppose the Mushrikeen! Lengthen the beards and shorten the moustaches. When Hazrat Ibn Umar (RA) used to go for Hajj or ‘Umrah, he would take hold of his beard in his fist. Whatever amount of the beard was in excess of the fist, he would trim it.” (Bukhari vol. 2, pg. 875)

In another hadith the following words are used:

“Make the moustaches extremely short and lengthen the beards.” (Bukhari Vol. 2, pg. 875)

It is wajib to keep a beard to the extent of one fist just as it is wajib to perform witr salah, and the two ‘eid salats. All the four imams agree on this issue. Allamah Shaami writes:

“To trim the beard when it is shorter than one fist in length as practiced by some people of the west and the hermaphrodites, has not been permitted by anyone i.e. any scholar.”

Hazrat Thanwi (RA) writes in Behishti Zewar (Heavenly Ornaments),

“It is haram to shave the beard as well as to trim it less than the length of one fist.” (Behishti Zewar section 11, pg. 115)

The word for beard in Arabic is lihyah which comes from the Arabic word for jaw. Therefore, the beard should be to the extent of one fist from the chin, the right side of the jaw, and the left side of the jaw, i.e. it should be the length of a fist from all three sides. Some people grow the beard to one fist from the chin but trim it to less than a fist from the sides. This is incorrect. If any one of the three sides of the beard has been shortened less than a fist, then this is a major sin.

The one who casts evil glances is cursed by Nabi ﷺ. Nabi ﷺ says in a Hadith mentioned in Mishkaat Shareef:

لعن اللہ الناظر والمنظور الیھ

“May the curse of Allah be upon the one who casts evil glances and upon the one who presents him/herself to be looked at.” (Mishkaat; Pg. 270)

If casting evil glances was a minor sin, then Nabi ﷺ, being a mercy to mankind would not have cursed its perpetrator. The curse of Nabi ﷺ is clear proof that this is a very despicable crime. The meaning of curse is to become distant from the mercy of Allah. Imam Raghib Isfahani mentions in Mufradaatul Qur’aan that the definition of لعنة (curse) is:

البعد عن الرحمة

“To become distant from mercy.”

Thus, he who has become distant from the mercy of Allah Ta’ala, cannot gain salvation from the evils of his Nafs. Only he who is under the shade of Allah’s mercy can attain salvation from the evils of the Nafs. Allah Ta’ala says:

ان النفس لامارة بالسوء

The Nafs abundantly commands evil.”
(Sura Yousuf; Ayat 53, Juz 13)

So how is it possible to be saved from the evils of Nafs? Allah Ta’ala further says:

الا مار حم ربی

“Except by the mercy of my Lord.”

From this, we understand that the only way to be saved from the evils of the Nafs is to come under the shade of Allah’s mercy. Allah Ta’ala who is the Creator of this Nafs Himself has proclaimed that those who are in His mercy will be saved. Therefore, the one who has come under the shade of الا مارحم ربی his Nafs did not remain امارة بالسوء (excessively commanding evil) rather it became امارة بالخیر (abundantly commanding good). This is why after the command of guarding the eyes, یغضوا من ابصارھم , Allah Ta’ala mentions, ویحفظوا فروجھم “Guard the private parts.” Because through the blessings of fulfilling the divine command of Allah Ta’ala and saving oneself from the curse of Nabi ﷺ one comes under the shade of Allah’s mercy. Now his private parts will also be safeguarded. Form this we conclude that the reward of guarding the eyes is that the private parts become safeguarded. On the contrary, if a person does not guard his eyes then he cannot guard his private parts either and curses which descends upon him is a separate punishment on its own.
