   My relationship with my sheikh is one of love, a recognition that nothing matters in this world except to please Allah Subhanau Wa Talla and listen and follow the advice of my Sheikh Arif Billah Maulana Shah Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar Sahab Damat Barkatuhum, especially in the matters of guarding one’s gaze. The special guidelines for Hajj and Umra is not the idea that he came up with one sitting but years of his companionship with his own Sheikh and years of his own experience. InshaAllah I will do my best to keep those guidelines when I will perform Umra in the month of June 2008.
   Through this relationship I have also come to know the real power that belongs to Allah Subhanau Wa Talla and those who are in service to Allah Subhanau Wa Talla. In our outer life we often seem surrounded by power dynamics, played out in the family or the workplace. We also see the corruptive power dynamics on the world stage. But in the relationship with a real teacher, one who is merged into the Absolute, who is one with Allah Subhanau Wa Talla, there is a power of a completely different magnitude, a power that belongs to the Creator and not the creation. The only response is awe whenever I hear his bayan.
   Each of us can tell many stories about our relationship with our teacher but there are the most precious moments, when through the grace of the Sheikh we are given an awareness of the nature of the divine, within ourselves and within life, when we are ready to listen to him with open heart and open mind and willing to do mujahida.
   Over the years I discovered my relationship with my sheikh as a quality of belonging that never loses hope in Allah Subhanau Wa Talla even I have fallen several times in the course of gaining nearness to Allah Subhanau Wa Talla. This is the characteristic of my Sheikh that he will take you out from the despair and connect you back with Allah Subhanau Talla. I pray to Allah Subhanau Wa Talla to give him health and may Allah Subhanau Wa Talla enable me to meet him on May 29, 2008.
